Following the concept, Rotterdam seemed like a promising place for a variety of sounds. After having visited the city a couple of times I chose some spots for recording. However, given circumstances such as whether, time and social movement within the city, I had to change plans: I systematically followed routes through the city, searching for paths and finding sounds.
On the outskirts of Rotterdam large lakes and parks (Kralingse, Zestienhoven) promised to provide sound spectacles – this was not the case, private places or motorways contaminated the sound of nature. In the harbor I came to the decision to open my ears in an alternative way, to hear and to see what was there rather than what I was looking for.
For the recording I used a directional microphone, a contact microphone, an ultrasonic detector (bats) and a binaural microphone.
